The 3:2 payout chart (what dealers memorize)
| Bet | 3:2 blackjack pays | 6:5 pays | You're shorted |
|---|
The mental shortcut for 3:2: half the bet, plus the bet. $15 → half is $7.50 → payout $22.50. For 6:5, divide the bet by 5 and pay 6 of them — which is why 6:5 tables prefer bets in $5 steps and round down (against you) on odd amounts at many houses.
Every payout at the table
- Regular win pays 1:1 — bet $25, win $25.
- Blackjack pays 3:2 (or 6:5 — check the felt) and beats any dealer 21 except a dealer blackjack, which pushes.
- Double down doubles the bet, so a won double pays 2× your original bet. When to do it.
- Split puts a second full bet up; each hand then wins or loses 1:1 independently.
- Insurance costs half your bet and pays 2:1 — a net of exactly your original bet when the dealer has blackjack. It's still a losing bet.
- Push pays nothing and costs nothing — your bet comes back.
