In May 1980, Massar met Bill Kaplan, a 1980 Harvard MBA who had already run a successful blackjack team in Las Vegas. Kaplan watched the MIT group play, spotted the flaws in how they were organized, and rebuilt the operation on business lines: formal training, standardized strategy, checked-out bankrolls, and outside investors who funded the team in exchange for a share of the winnings.
That structure is what turned a handful of talented amateurs into a machine. Through the 1980s the team grew — by the mid-80s it had roughly 35 active players and a bankroll reported around $350,000, and across its whole run somewhere near 70–80 people played in one role or another. In the early 1990s Kaplan and Massar formalized it again as Strategic Investments, a limited partnership that raised money from investors; it paid its final dividends and wound down in 1993.
How the system actually worked
Card counting alone has a problem: to profit, a counter has to bet small when the deck is bad and big when it's good — and that bet spread is exactly what casino staff are trained to spot. The MIT team's insight was to split the two jobs across different people:

- Not six kids — closer to eighty people. The dramatized "small crew" was really a large, rotating operation with investors and management over more than a decade.
- The book itself is disputed. The Boston Globe reported that many of its key dramatic events didn't happen or were greatly exaggerated. Team member John Chang told the Globe the events were "so exaggerated they're basically untrue."
- The real work was boring. No floor-wide montage, no suitcase of cash, no genius epiphany — just slow, disciplined grinding, looking unremarkable, betting a little more when the count tipped and a little less when it didn't.
